Take Stock in Children

A Florida pre-paid scholarship program for low-income students, administered by the Brevard Schools Foundation.

Too many deserving kids who want to go to college can’t, simply because they can’t afford it.  Sadly, 40 percent of Florida’s children grow up in near-poverty. Their college hopes are dashed at a very early age.  Once kids give up, they fall prey to drugs and violence, and end up in jail.

What if these young people could be given access to their dreams and aspirations?  What if someone got to them before they gave up, and found a way to keep them in school? What if someone found a way to give them a chance, a way out, so they could become productive and successful citizens?

Fortunately, somebody has! TAKE STOCK IN CHILDREN is a non-profit program that targets deserving low-income children in our community to receive scholarships to college or vocational school.  But first, they must honor their end of the bargain by staying drug- and crime-free, maintaining satisfactory grades, and exhibiting good behavior in school.

Along with the promise of a scholarship, all children are assigned a mentor, a caring adult volunteer who meets with the student once a week at school to provide encouragement, motivation and support, and be a positive role model for the student.

If you’ve got what it takes to be a mentor, or if you would like to get involved call Brevard Schools Foundation and ask for Marilyn Fashano at 633-1000 ext. 407/408.
